On September 25, 2015, the 193-member United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The international community also committed to ensure healthy lives for all, at all ages through the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). UHC means that all people can receive health services they need while ensuring that the use of these services does not expose the user to financial hardship. In India, an estimated 39 million people are pushed into poverty every year due to health problems while 30 percent of people in rural and 20 percent in urban areas go untreated due to financial constraints. In an attempt to increase access to healthcare and reduce economic burden the Central and State Governments have rolled out various publicly financed healthcare insurance schemes. These schemes have helped in increasing access and affordability of healthcare in order to achieve UHC the height, depth and breadth of services provided need to be improved. The implementation of UHC also demands adequate healthcare infrastructure and skilled health workforce to ensure adequate quality of care to every citizen.

A one-day Symposium is organized by the Department of Public Health, in association with the Christelijke Mutualiteit, Belgium; India Platform & Department of Community Medicine, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Mangaluru, Karnataka, India, on the 8th of April 2017. The Symposium focuses on various aspects of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) such as applications, best practices, current scenario, gaps, challenges, and scope for improvement in an international perspective.
